MMM Design Group is designing a central administrative and dispatching office and maintenance facility for Bay Transit, a growing rural transportation agency on Virginia’s Northern Neck Peninsula. The facility will be the first constructed in the Richmond County Commerce Center and is intended to set the standard for design and planning. The “regionalist” approach to its architecture will reflect the region’s rich architectural heritage with a fresh interpretation that foresees the region’s progressive growth and optimistic future.

Our fleet facility designers guided Bay Transit personnel through a review of their program requirements to verify the need for 10,000 square feet of maintenance space and 5,000 square feet of administrative space. The design was planned for future expansion to provide additional repair bays, a vehicle inspection canopy, and facilities for an intercity bus depot, i.e. a public waiting room, rest rooms, ticket sales, and a baggage room. The cost of the initial construction is estimated to be $2,111,000.

The repair bays will feature a drive-through plan to minimize operating vehicles in reverse. 240v and 480v power will be provided at outlets throughout the bays to allow for flexibility in the location of shop equipment. Portable, synchronized, electric vehicle lifts will add to the flexibility by allowing any size wheel-base to be lifted at any location in or outside the building. Waste oil is planned to be recovered and recycled in a waste oil burning, forced hot air heater.

The office area is planned to provide individual suites for: 1) administration; 2) dispatching; and 3) operations. The central core will proved common-use areas such as the Training/Conference Room and Rest rooms. Circulation is designed to allow the public to use the Training/Conference Room for community functions without disrupting business.

This project is currently on schedule to meet its budget, deadlines and design goals.
