BRIDGE STREET BRIDGE
City of Hampton
Hampton, Virginia

This project for the City of Hampton replaces a key bridge that serves as a gateway between the historic waterfront community of "Little England" and the urban setting of Downtown Hampton and the Virginia Air & Space Museum. Extensive public involvement is required. The new bridge design will enhance the existing 73 year old bridge's architecture and vastly improve the area streetscaping. The design will improve horizontal and vertical clearances and eliminate the current traffic load limitations.

Heavy utilities will require temporary relocation and replacement, including an 18" siphon vent, 4" gas main, and two electrical conduits. Provisions will also be made to include an 8" waterline and current overhead utilities (including power and communications) in addition to 24" and 30" underground siphon vents. These will all be neatly "tucked away" under the bridge while remaining accessible for maintenance.

Important aesthetic elements will closely match existing bridge components, such as railing and lighting, with improvements to comply with current federal, state, and local codes. Cost effective improvements will also be included, most notably precast arch facades. With the cost savings provided, important added features will be included in the contract, with the most visible being a "scenic lookout" area, separate from traffic and integrated with sidewalks.

Site geometry was a critical consideration in plan development as crossroads and building entrances are literally within a few feet of each end of the bridge. Sensitivity to public access during and after construction was a top consideration.
