CAPE STORY BY-THE-SEA DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
City of Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, Virginia

This drainage improvement project was performed in several phases, including a study phase and multiple design phases. Work included design of a ditch and storm sewer improvements to reduce flooding in this residential neighborhood.

During the study phase, MMM performed an inventory of existing drainage structures and developed a computer model runoff for the watershed in this 12-block sandy-oil neighborhood near Seashore State Park. Several alternative solutions to flooding problems were developed and a report describing advantages, disadvantages, costs, and recommendations was prepared.

In the design phase, topographic surveys were performed, locating all surfaces features and underground utilities. Detailed construction documents were prepared for the proposed storm sewers, culverts, ditches, and tidal gate facilities. Utility conflicts were resolved and environmental permit requirements were investigated. A small submersible storm pump station was included to relieve flooding on Beech Street.

A second phase included design of additional roadside drainage improvements on nine streets to reduce ponding problems. This phase also incorporated bike path improvements (developed by the city) into one bid package.
