As part of a GSA contract, MMM developed adaptive reuse plans for the
interior restoration of this historic landmark built in 1859. The interior
renovation of this 31,000 SF building called for the removal of selected
interior finishes leading to the exterior wall in order to seal the
building and required the development of an integrated HVAC system
to maintain specified humidity and air quality conditions.
Ducting was discretely
concealed within architectural features and interior spaces for sensitive
retrofit or replacement of electro-mechanical
features,
which were then refinished to the original appearance within the Customhouse’s
historic design context. Building modifications for elevator installation,
life safety, and other services were also upgraded in order to meet present
day code requirements.
