NEW MARINE CONTAINER TERMINAL
APM Terminals
Portsmouth, Virginia

MMM Design Group was commissioned for the design of a terminal operations and maintenance building plus additional buildings to support a new port complex. In total, MMM provided professional design services for 173,249 square feet of structures for the project.

The Vehicle Maintenance facility is a one-story building of 40,900 SF and a very complex industrial structure providing operational support to the terminal complex. 120 feet wide by 341 feet long, it includes a raised monitor-type curved roof for ventilation louvers and natural lighting. The exterior walls feature translucent fiberglass sandwich panels for natural daylighting. The structural system utilized steel trusses to provide bay sizes of 40 by 50 feet. The floor of the Vehicle Maintenance Shop was up to 12 inches thick to accommodate floor loads of 1,500 psf and vehicle wheel loads of up to 30,000 pounds.

The Terminal Operations Building is a state-of-the-art office building of 83,449 SF. The four-story building houses the premier port operations headquarters facility on the East Coast. User groups include APM terminal management and operations staff, with appropriate interior amenities to accommodate VIP and visitor groups.

Architecture, MEP engineering, structural engineering, civil engineering, utility coordination construction contract negotiation assistance, construction administration, and on-site construction observation were included in the scope of work for this project.
