Most recently, as part of an open-end contract with ODU, MMM provided
design services for the renovation of several laboratory and classroom
areas within Alfriend. The project was completed as part of a nine-phase
renovation effort to ensure non-interference with student and laboratory
activities, especially for active research in progress that otherwise
would have been jeopardized without sensitive construction phasing.
The renovation consisted of the conversion of selected laboratory areas and classroom spaces into advanced biochemical research lab areas. The project involved approximately 11,000 SF of laboratory space, which included:
> Asbestos removal
> Replacement of fume hoods and supporting HVAC systems
> Replacement of the majority of the electrical power distribution and plumbing
services
> Installation of fire safety equipment
> Installation of a centralized deionized water system
The design of a complex HVAC control system to manage airflow in 16 laboratory
pods to prevent migration of airborne toxins and contaminants was critical
to the project.
