MMM Design Group is providing full architectural and engineering services for the programming, design, and contract administration of a new 37,000 SF administration and vehicle maintenance/storage facility for the Hampton Roads Sanitation District's (HRSD's) proposed new North Shore Maintenance Center. The site, adjacent to the Newport News Airport, must conform to FAA height and setback restrictions. The building construction must mitigate the noise generated at the adjacent runways. Before proceeding with Construction Documents, MMM prepared a Preliminary Engineering Report in accordance with HRSD guidlelines and standards. MMM developed and analyzed several site layouts and several building configurations to arrive at the most functional and economical solution.

The facility will be comprised of three functional areas in an "L" configurations. The short wing of the "L" will be a two-level administrative wing with a two-story glass atrium serving as the main entrance and focal point for the façade. The long wing of the "L" will contain high vehicular maintenance bays, fabrication areas, parts storage, tool storage, and vehicle storage. Extensive use of insulated translucent panels will fill this area with diffused natural daylight. The knuckle of the “L’ will contain functions that are common to the two wings, i.e. toilets, lockers, showers, meeting/training facilities, and the lunch room. A portion of the building will be designed as an emergency "Hurricane Ride-Out" compound capable of sustaining Class II hurricane conditions.

The site will be divided into two functional areas. One, readily accessible to the street, will include the main entrance to the building and provide public and employee parking. The second, secured by gated fencing, will provide a fueling island, staging area, internal circulation, and an extensive outdoor storage and laydown area for the vast amount of materials and supplies that HRSD must maintain for quick repair and maintenance of the system.
