TOWN POINT PARK
City of Norfolk
Norfolk, Virginia

The City of Norfolk selected MMM to renovate the eight-acre Town Point Park. The scope of work included a complete redesign and layout of the park including major upgrades for performance venues, parking, pedestrian circulation, and key recreational elements so that the park could continue to serve Norfolk as the premier downtown recreational and performance park in Hampton Roads for the next 25 years. With the renovation, it was the intention of the MMM for the park to promote the cultural enrichment of City residents and visitors alike through a state-of-the-art and environmentally-conscious downtown urban park with generous green space for community gatherings and events.
Overall park improvements included significant planting design, ornamental brickwork, sidewalks, lighting, signage and all civil engineering: water, stormwater, and drainage. Hardscape materials were used to unify the site with the historic downtown area. With its rich river view landscapes, the “new” Town Point Park is now a green space of peace and tranquility in an urban setting. A total of 186 newly planted trees – ten different species, 1,365 shrubs, 2,270 perennials and 8,422 ornamental grasses and ground covers create color and vibrancy throughout the park.
Lighting fixtures installed along the pathways and throughout the park were designed to improve visibility and safety, reduce light pollution, and minimize energy requirements. The trash containers, benches and bike racks were manufactured with recycled material content.
The project was put out for bid and came in under budget. Following construction, the park reopened on time as scheduled to host Harborfest 2009, the principal summer festival of the City.
